AFA Executive Committee to meet on strike lifting

Buenos Aires, March 2 (NA) – The Executive Committee of the Argentine Football Association (AFA) will meet this Tuesday to address whether to lift the strike for the ninth matchday of the Professional League's Apertura Tournament, as a form of repudiation against the summons for a statement to the entity's president, Claudio Tapia. According to what Argentine News Agency was able to find out, the measure would have been promoted by a leader who ended up in the eye of the storm due to the negative impact the proposal had. Indeed, Argentine football clubs came out to support the AFA's measure on their social networks, but three did not: Racing, River, and Estudiantes de La Plata, the main institution that confronts the mother entity. These three clubs coincide in one characteristic: their leadership has people close to the National Government led by Javier Milei, so one of the representatives of these three in the Executive Committee could be the one who ended up in the eye of the storm due to the proposal to lift the strike. The meeting will be held on Tuesday at noon, amidst the strong dispute between the AFA and the National Government – which the AFA denounces for “persecution” – and the recent release of the gendarme Nahuel Gallo, detained for over a year in Venezuela and repatriated after a management effort by the mother entity of Argentine football. Last week, Justice called the AFA authorities, including President Tapia, to a statement hearing in a case for alleged tax irregularities. From the mother entity of Argentine football, they emphasized that there is no enforceable debt and that the questioned payments were made voluntarily before their respective due dates. They also clarified that this argument has already been presented to the Justice system and is currently awaiting resolution from the Appeals Court. They also accused ARCA of trying to turn non-matured obligations into the basis of a supposed tax crime. This ninth matchday was supposed to start this Thursday with the match between Gimnasia de Mendoza and Defensa y Justicia at the Victor Antonio Legrottaglie stadium and close with River receiving Atlético Tucumán at the Monumental stadium. Additionally, on this matchday, San Lorenzo was set to receive Independiente at the Pedro Bidegáin stadium, Racing was to face Huracán at the Presidente Perón stadium, both on Saturday, and Boca was to visit Central Córdoba de Santiago del Estero on Sunday.
